Mission Statement: (See Web Site For Updated Information)
IVU has opportunities for pediatric & adult urologists, urogynecologists, pediatric & adult anesthesiolgists, and recovery, circulating and OR nurses. All volunteers should be in active practice and need to complete an IVU volunteer application (available on the website). IVU has several programs in which it places its volunteers. IVU sends 3-6 full surgical teams a year. These are composed of 2 surgeons, 2 anesthesiologists, 3 nurses, and 1 support/logistics person. In the 10-14 day trips to Africa, Asia or Central America, the team performs on average 40-50 surgeries in 5 days along side local medical staff. The team also gives lectures. The main emphasis of this program is training the local staff. For team workshops, IVU provides full logistical and organizational support and will make all necessary travel and surgery arrangements. Physicians are asked to cover her/his airfare and food. Nurses are asked to provide a $400 trip fee and cover their own food. IVU will provide local transportation, accommodation, interpreters, surgical supplies and equipment, visas, necessary licenses, and medical and evacuation insurance. IVU also places urologists in its Service Fellow Program or as mentors in its Resident Scholar Program. Volunteers spend 7-14 days with one to three other surgeons and provide surgical service and/or teaching in sites such as India, Vietnam and Nigeria. Volunteers are responsible for their own travel costs and IVU provids some logistical support. Please contact the office for more details.
